For Immediate Release

OAKLAND, Calif. (April 4, 2007)  -- Announcing an exhibition of photography by Robert Jew, titled Chino Latino Meets The Angel Baby: The next chapter of the Kai Doy Jook Sing en Mexico Series.

The exhibition will open on Friday, April 6, 2007 at the Front Gallery (35 Grand Ave, Oakland CA.) The reception will be held from 7pm – 10 pm in conjunction with Oakland Art Murmur First Fridays (www.oaklandartmurmur.com) and the exhibition will run until May 29, 2007.  Additionally, there will be a second reception for the artist Friday, May 4, 2007, 7-10pm.

Chino Latino Meets The Angel Baby is the second part of an ongoing series titled Kai Doy Jook Sing en Mexico, based on photographs the artist takes on yearly trips throughout Mexico. The current exhibition focuses on images from his trip this Christmas to Oaxaca, shortly after the Chiapas uprising.

Through the use of cutting edge digital photography, sly photo manipulation and large scale printing techniques, Robert Jew makes it clear that his photographs are not meant to be viewed as simply documenting life in Mexico, but that he is inserting himself and ultimately inviting the viewer to join him in entering into the life of the photographic works.

The Front Gallery shows contemporary artwork by artists at different career levels. Exhibitions span various disciplines and mediums in both traditional and unconventional formats. The main criterion for work shown in the gallery is that it be current, lively and compelling.   The gallery is located at 35 Grand Avenue, at the corner of Broadway and Grand in downtown Oakland.  Receptions are free and open to the public.

The Front Gallery is a member of Oakland Art Murmur, host of Oakland's First Friday Art walk.

* “Kai Doy” is a pidgin Cantonese term for a bad or mischievous boy used by a loving mother; it is a gentle admonishment. “Jook Sing” is a Chinese expression for an American-born Chinese person. While traditionally carrying a slightly negative implication, in Robert Jew’s allusion, “Jook Sing” takes on an impish tone of self mockery; a note not to take one’s self overly seriously and to be open to other environs.
